Bariatric FAQs
Obesity is defined by the accumulation of fat in the body that results in weight increase and is defined by BMI (Body Mass Index) of over 30kg/m2. Morbid obesity is the severe form of obesity and is defined by a BMI over 40kg/m2, where the person experiences other medical problems that occur as a result of morbid obesity.
People who suffer from obesity will benefit from both these procedures. In particular, people who have BMI higher that 30kg/m2, including Type II obesity (BMI 35kg/m2) and morbid obesity (BMI> 40kg/m2).
These are two different procedures that share the same goal, which is to decrease the size of the stomach and be able to feel full with only small amounts of food.
In Adjusted Gastric Banding a band is placed around the stomach, whereas, in Sleeve Gastrectomy a portion of the stomach is removed.
Additionally, the Adjusted gastric band is a reversible procedure as opposed to Sleeve Gastrectomy.
Lastly, Sleeve Gastrectomy is believed to cause permanent results (lose up to 100% of excess body weight) whereas, in Adjusted Gastric Banding (lose up to 70% of excess body weight) there is a fear of relapse after the band is removed.
